Nuts & Bolts - Week of 2/29/16

Admin team will be busy this week preparing for 6th grade parent orientation and our Gold Ribbon site validation, but we will be in and out of classrooms to completing round #2 of informals. If you haven't received your 2nd informal, expect us this or next week as our deadline is 3/13.

  • Any agenda items / questions you'd like discussed give them to your team leader Monday for Tuesday morning's meeting.
PBIS Reminders
  • "Flood the market with YOGOWYPIs" - target = appropriate student conduct; 1 per period?
  • Remind CICO Students to get scores each period - Current List
Gold Ribbon Site Validation 3/3
  • Please review the schedule and remember that admin will be busy hosting the site validation team.

Shout Out! - Jennie Bremer

Jennie consistently delivers innovative instruction in her classroom, visionary leadership as department head, and is always willing to collaborate, receive/deliver professional development, and help however she can. She successfully led the launch of Travis' 1st Annual Geography Showcase, mentors student teachers, and actively participates on district committees. Is there anything she can't do? Thanks Jennie for consistently being one of our MVPs!

Tech Tip - Video Notes

VideoNotes is a free web tool that allows students to take notes on a video they are watching. The notes are synchronized with the video being watched. The good thing about VideoNotes is that it is integrated into Google Drive which means that students will be able to save their notes directly to their Drive account and access, edit, and work on them anytime they want.

Rigor Redefined

Recently, administrators from across the district were taken through an exercise where we were asked to define "rigor". An AVID trainer took us through the exercise jig-sawing a reading of this ARTICLE by ASCD. The writer interviewed "leaders in settings from Apple to Unilever to the U.S. Army and reviewed the research on workplace skills." His conclusion, "the world of work has changed profoundly." What's most interesting is that the writer spent time specifically observing reputable AP classrooms and found a wide disconnect.

Nuts & Bolts - Weeks of 2/22 & 2/29

PBIS: Flood the market with YOGOWYPIs. There has been a steady stream of disciplinary incidents that have occurred over the last 3 weeks. Our "Tier 1" supports need to be reinforced with consistent verbal praise, specific feedback tied to our Behavior Expectations, etc. Please encourage yourself to find a way to give out one per class period.

Tuesday, 2/23, 6-8pm "1st Annual Geography Showcase" - Come out and support our amazing Social Science team as they host an evening showcasing student research projects.

Wednesday, 2/24 PLC - "District Initiative" - Feedback Session = School Climate Survey, Annual 1/2 Way Staff Survey

Tuesday, 3/1 Team Leader Meeting - If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas that you need discussed, send agenda items to Team Leaders. We are committed to meeting the needs of our teams.

Tuesday, 3/1 MS Track Meet @ YLHS 4:30-7:30pm - "Who's coming with me?"

Shout Out! - Shirleen St. Clair

Once again, Shirleen has demonstrated her ongoing commitment to our school and community. Here's an excerpt from a letter she recently received notifying her of receiving a $1k grant she had written for her students:
"While our funding was limited, we may not have been able to grant you the full amount requested. You have creatively demonstrated that these projects will effectively help students master the basic literacy skills needed to be successful. In the next couple of weeks, a letter along with a check from the California Community Foundation/Reading is The way up fund will be mailed directly to your school."
Fantastic work Shirleen! Did I mention that she started a sign-language club, leads Shayda's Girl Scout troop, carts her to and from Encore events, and is genuinely innovating in the field of teaching her students how to communicate using technology!?

Jobs of Today!

There's a consistent message heard in the world of education -- "we're preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist -- yet even a look at this list that Identifies the 25 Best Jobs in America for 2016, will give everyone cause to pause. Determined by combining three key factors – number of job openings, salary and career opportunities rating "Glassdoor" says these jobs stand out across all three categories.

Tech Tip - Cite Lighter

Here's another great, online, close reading, standards-aligned, annotating practice resource. Students can map out essays using outlines, pulling in website resources with MLA format. It also integrates well with Google Docs. Worth an experiment with a class to see if you'd like to use this! https://www.citelighter.com/signup

Nuts/Bolts - Weeks of 2/16 & 2/22

Discovery Education / Streaming: Starting next year, the district will discontinue their license with Discovery Education. You can still access it and download the videos / resources that you need. Consider storing the videos in your Google Drive account.

Chromebook Carts / Computer Labs: Carts B-E are available for teachers to book. The devices will be labeled by the end of February. Please lock the cart and hide the key when you are not in your room, or overnight. If you use any lab on campus, please book it and make sure you leave it tidy and organized for the next teacher.

Formals / Informals: Administrators need to complete 2nd informals for permanent employees by 3/13. If you are off cycle, consider arranging a time/date with your evaluator ASAP. Formal evals must be completed by 4/30. Calendar these ASAP! Time will run out quickly.

2/17: Structured PLC - Newsela in Room 30

Shout Out! - Laura Moody

In addition to being ELA Department Head, NJHS Co-Leader, and PBIS Team Member, Laura was just selected to be part of the district's ELA Adoption Committee. Her commitment to Travis Ranch and our district is consistently demonstrated through her diligent efforts inside and outside the classroom every day. Thanks for your consistent hard work and dedication to our students and community!

Tech Tip: "Formative"

Formative is a platform that lets teachers see the responses of a whole class at one time—even open-response and hand-drawn responses. Teachers create assessments from scratch right in the Formative platform, or upload an existing PDF or Word document and build a quiz from there. Students access the assessments by entering a class code on their own devices.  Then, as students take the assessments, the teacher can look at his or her own device and see what each student is writing simultaneously; each student’s work appears in its own little square and fills up in real time.

The Reflective Teacher: Taking a Long Look

While reading an article from NEA on "How to Keep Students Accountable" I was drawn to one teacher's adaptation of a rubric strategy from Marzano's book "Becoming a Reflective Teacher". In searching down Marzano's book, I came across another fantastic article on Edutopia, clearly outlining how to consistently reflect and grow as an educator (read the article for more details on each strategy)
1. Feedback from Students
2. Write it Down
3. Blog it
4. Record it

Shout Out! - Jalinda Larkin

She's a meticulous, multi-tasker ninja who works diligently daily to show us she's a True Trailblazer. Every week, Jalinda works hard to ensure shared Google Calendars, ASB accounting, and Trailblazers of the Day/Month are accurate for the benefit of all. She does this all in the midst of answering phones, covering the health office, and pitching in anywhere & everywhere she can! Thanks for all you do to support staff, students, and our community Jalinda! We'd be on the wrong trail without you!

Tech Tip: Versal - Online Lesson / Learning Platform

Every day, a new learning platform launches that allows teachers to integrate various media and assessment methods. This one is -- Versal -- is intriguing because of all the features it offers. If you are thinking of experimenting with a flipped classroom concept, this one might be for you?

The Curse of Knowledge

"A strong base of content knowledge makes us blind to the lengthy process of acquiring it." This Edutopia Article contends that content knowledge is far more difficult to retain for our learners than we expect it to be. The short article elaborates about how to integrate 7 core ideas into pedagogical practices.

  1. Emotion:
  2. Multi-sensory Lessons
  3. Spacing
  4. Narratives
  5. Analogies & Examples
  6. Novelty
  7. Teach Facts

  • Paola - Finished organizing WE Club's clothing donation to OC Rescue Shelter -- 900 items!
  • Cari - Recording lessons using screencast software, uploading it to Google Drive, and pushing it out using Google Classroom for students who are absent, or for those who need this additional support at home.

Amazing innovation, teamwork, and service! Thanks for representing us well team!

Tech Tip - Music Transitions

You can easily embed musical queues into your lesson to signal transitions, or certain routines / procedures, or as a discussion timer. If you have the music file (mp3, wav, etc.), you can upload and crop it directly using https://mp3cut.net/.

If not, find it on youtube, then download it for free using: http://www.youtube-mp3.org/. Then, upload and crop away.

For some pre-made cropped music, download this Resource Pack I made for ActivInspire flipcharts.
