Help Tweens Learn Better Social Skills

Teaching the "soft skills" to middle schoolers is a challenge at best, but this 20 year veteran provides a kickstart by identifying some useful resources for explicitly teaching social skills like:
  • how to enter and exit a conversation
  • how to introduce themselves and others
  • how to approach a teacher or other authority figure and ask for assistance
  • how to take turns speaking and listening
  • how to interpret body language

Shout Out! - Gina Glaze

We recently completed our 2nd RTI - Voyager Sweep where we tested students' comprehension and fluency. 100% of students in Gina's classroom scored "On Track". This is fantastic news, and demonstrates how effective Gina is as an educator. She made significant progress with students in her support class over a short period of time. The gains will give these students an elective class 2nd semester and we'll leverage her availability in pushing in co-teaching in an identified classroom.

Tech Tip - Annotate PDFs

We are well on our way to equipping Trailblazers with the tools they'll need to become equipped with 21st century skills. In addition to developing close reading strategies and annotating text using Newsela, there's a fantastic, free Chrome Extension called "Kami". Once loaded, this tool allows teachers and students to annotate PDF files. You can save virtually anything as a PDF and have students highlight, underline, circle, etc. using this interactive tool. Give it a try! Pretty slick!

How to Use Retrieval Practice to Improve Learning

This article reinforces the idea that learning comes directly from the struggle. "Often, we think we’ve learned some piece of information, but we come to realize we struggle when we try to recall the answer. It’s precisely this “struggle” or challenge that improves our memory and learning – by trying to recall information, we exercise or strengthen our memory, and we can also identify gaps in our learning." Carefully embedding extra instructional time to allow for this struggle is a challenge, but one worth its weight.

• Improves students’ complex thinking and application skills
• Improves students’ organization of knowledge
• Improves students’ transfer of knowledge to new concepts

Dana just got published on "Middleweb's" website! Congrats! Here'e the LINK. She wrote about the welcoming committee that she manages for new Trailblazers. She frequently meets with students to provide academic and emotional counseling, coordinates the career day, supervises RTI sweeps, is our 504 Coordinator, mentors a counseling intern, and oversees before/after school tutoring programs. Fantastic work Dana!

Why Emotion Is More Important Than Understanding

This short blog post on "Teach Thought" argues that student emotions are at the core of engagement and learning. "Begin the learning with emotion, use it throughout the process, and end there." Praising students, emptying their cup, and understanding how to tap into their emotions translates directly to memorable learning.

Tech Tip - Rubric Grading within Google Docs/Slides

A couple teachers had asked me recently how they can rubric score assignments submitted through Google Classroom. There are 2 great add-ons that enable you to do this:
1. Doctopus & 2. Goobric. Watch this video to see how streamlined these tools make rubric grading within Google Classroom.

Also, she just found out this morning that she is the recipient of a $5,000 School's First Grant Award. She'll be using the money to invent a robotics semester elective for 6th graders. CONGRATS! We're VERY lucky to have you aboard!

New 'Star Wars' Character Maz Kanata Is Based on a Teacher

We all know that teachers have a profound impact on the lives of students. Who knew this could potentially translate into the creation of a blockbuster movie character (Maz Kanata) from the Star Wars franchise? See this article for more details about how the creators of the "Force Awakens" integrated qualities of their high school teacher into this new character.

In our eyes, for all you do to inspire students, you all have Jedi status!

Tech Tip - Plickers (Paper Clickers)

Looking for a cheap and easy way to get formative assessment going in your class. Plickers produces a unique, physical card for each student. Students hold the card with their multiple choice answer facing forward, and your phone's camera gathers their answers, providing you individual / summary data. All this with no cost, and no need for students to have any devices.
